Thesis - An Stór, A New Age Library

Project overview

This thesis explores the reintegration of a quay side derelict grain silo into society through appropriation of the public realm. The site is along the quays of Cork city, Ireland.

The proposed architectural intervention within this silo creates a free space for the existing community to connect and collaborate. A new age library where one can borrow household goods and necessities. A place of meeting and borrowing that is sustainable in design and functionWithin this harsh monolithic structure, area for play and exploration occur by removing partial walls to create open cavernous spaces and narrow passages between them.

Today one finds many contemporary sheltered public spaces often within private spaces, which render the user as a passive body within the space rather than allowing the individual to actively participate, interact and alter their surroundings. This proposal plays with the idea of allowing the individual to explore and utilize the space as well as acting as a focal point for the community.

The silo is revived as donations of disused goods are repaired and available to borrow. Through this there is an exchange of knowledge and skills within the community. Just as the community gives to the silo, the silo gives back to its surrounding community.
